<abstract xml:lang="en">

The article is focused on the study of linguistic contradictions in modern English-language legal discourse. Taking into account the peculiarities of the legal English language, as well as modern trends in linguistic simplification, the author highlights such contradictions in the language of law as accuracy-redundancy, emotional neutrality-metaphoric character, conservatism-innovation, definition of legal categories and concepts through negation, discrepancies between the universality of legal formulations and the possibility of subjective interpretation of legal norms, which reflect the contradictions typical of legal discourse. The research is based on the texts of the popular-educational sub-discourse of legal discourse, reflecting the trends of linguistic simplification, using content analysis, discourse analysis, and comparative analysis. The author comes to the conclusion that the modernization of the legal language affects only the formal side of communication, while the deep characteristic features of professional legal discourse persist and continue to influence the perception and interpretation of legal norms by a wide audience.
