<abstract xml:lang="en">

The article considers the English language functioning in Nigeria's multilingual postcolonial space under conditions of linguistic stratification. The aim of the study is to identify the sociolinguistic mechanisms underlying the institutional dominance of English and to analyze its interactions with Nigerian Pidgin and indigenous languages. The study employed methods of sociolinguistic analysis, elements of discourse analysis, a comparative-functional approach, and the analysis of scholarly sources on language policy in postcolonial societies. The key findings include the identification of the pragmatic paradox of English, which consists in its simultaneous integrative and stratifying functions, as well as the systematization of the factors determining its status as a language of social prestige and institutional communication. The findings can be used in language policy research, the development of educational programs in multilingual societies, and teaching sociolinguistics and intercultural communication.
